Students in all Harris degree programs are expected to complete all Core courses in the first quarter in which those courses are offered, unless another timeline is laid for their specific degree program (for example, MSCAPP students take the microeconomics sequence in their second year.)
Rarely, a student may wish to delay a Core course. In these cases, the student must receive the permission of the Dean of Students via this form to delay the course. Some reasons a student may request to delay a Core course include:
- The student wishes to drop down below full-time enrollment due to a health issue, emergency, or academic struggle.
- The student was unable to pass or complete the preceeding Core course in the sequence. For example, if a student did not pass Microeconomics I they would need to delay taking Microeconomics II until the following year.
- There is a course the student prefers to take in a quarter which would usually be filled with entirely Core courses. Requests of this type will only be approved if the course is deemed to be of high importance to the student’s educational and professional goals and if one or more of the following is true:
- The course will not be offered in future quarters or years
- The course is a prerequisite to other high-importance courses for the student, and the student will not be able to complete the latter courses unless they take the course in the current quarter.
- The student can demonstrate that taking the course in advance of starting a job or internship is critical for them to be hired.
Even in cases that fit the criteria above, the Dean of Students reserves the right to deny a request if they feel that doing so is in the best interest of the student. Where possible, students who need to take a non-Core course in a Core quarter should enroll in that class as a fourth course in addition to their required Core workload.
